STOP. THINK. CONNECT™... Think Again

Each time someone turns on their laptop, all they want to do is to complete the necessary task as quickly as possible - download an image or send an email, share an update on social media, find the desired file, and so on.

But it turns out our impatience can have a negative impact on user security. Have you ever got a cold shiver of fear running down your spine after clicking a random link or popup when you’ve been trying to do something online too quickly?

There are so many tricky scenarios to fall into - downloading annoying software for some unknown search agent which is impossible to delete; installing malware or a security solution infected by a virus; and even worse - losing money, data, and personal information.

The least we can do

We always voluntarily post lots of personal information online. Moreover, different organizations worldwide, along with governments, collect personal user data by whatever means possible to evade strict data privacy laws in the US.

Many of us have no or only a small idea about how our personal data is used. 59% of Americans have very little/or no understanding about what companies do with their data, and 78% have the same lack of knowledge about how the government collects their data

In the case of cybersecurity, increased awareness and understanding of potential threats are the best way to increase our data privacy protection. This is the least we can do. So let’s do it and do it with care.

The STOP.THINK.CONNECT.™ campaign explained

In 2010, a coalition of private companies, nonprofit and governmental organizations with leadership provided by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and the Anti-Phishing Working Group launched the STOP.THINK.CONNECT.™ campaign. This national public awareness initiative focuses on helping all digital citizens stay safer and more secure online.

The core messages of STOP.THINK.CONNECT.™  can be explained as:

STOP to take the time to understand the risks and recognize potential problems.

THINK to make sure there are no warning signs that safety or data may be threatened by online experiences and behavior.

CONNECT to the online world with confidence, knowing you’ve taken the right steps to safeguard yourself and your devices connected to the web.

Developing healthy digital habits together

One of the primary goals of the STOP.THINK.CONNECT.™ campaign is to teach people how to develop healthy digital habits. This is why it contains a set of tips on how to achieve the maximum security level. Is it hard to follow them? Will we need additional help to stay safe?

Let’s dive deeper.

Keep a clean machine

This advice is to always update apps to the latest versions and protect any devices connected to the internet with antivirus software. We should also use antivirus to scan external drives plugged into our device.

Protect our personal information

This section is about utilizing strong authentication tools. They include biometric keys and one-time codes, protecting our personal information with strong passwords and using unique passes for each one, as well as keeping all passes in one safe place - either physically or digitally.

Connect with care

Following this tip means avoiding any suspicious looking links, even if we know the source. Also, we should correctly configure our WiFi spot to limit undesired access and only access secure links. Links starting with “https://” or “shttp://” are secure and ensure that a website has taken additional measures to guarantee your data security.

Be web wise

The authors of these tips suggest we should keep pace with the latest security news, read about new digital security methods and share it with friends and family. We also shouldn’t hurry and make considered decisions. So if someone or something requires us to act immediately, we should stop and think if we’re doing the right thing. And of course, it’s  sensible to keep backups of our most important data just in case.

Be a good online citizen

This tip suggests we need to think about the consequences of posting any potentially sensitive information about ourselves, family or and friends online, in line with the digital etiquette of “do as you would be done by”. In addition, in case of stolen money, data or personal details, we need to report this to the Internet Crime Complaint Center or our local law enforcement or state attorney..

Own our online presence

The last tip is devoted to valuing personal information. According to the  STOP.THINK.CONNECT.™ campaign, all of us should think about any information we share, how we do it, and whether we really need to do this at all.

What we need to do next

After reading all the tips, we can come to a lot of conclusions:

  • “48 apps are ready for update” is a sentence that may mean our Mac or PC is insecure
  • “12345”, “qwerty”, or “password” passes can no longer be trusted to protect our personal data
  • Links embedded in emails from your mom may not be secure
  • The text ‘’CLICK WITHIN 10 SECONDS AND GET 120% CASHBACK” doesn’t necessarily mean we should click. Are they for real with this?
  • We should obviously think twice before posting the photo with our plane tickets online, especially with the full QR code on it

...and many others.

But there are so many rules. It may be really hard to re-educate yourself on online security when there is no one to help and remind us of the most important points. This is why we offer you a decent substitution...
